TLDR Sponges made of soy protein and β-chitin with human cells from hair or fat can speed up healing of chronic wounds.
The study explored the use of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) from hair follicles and adipose tissue, combined with sponge-like scaffolds (SLS) made of soy protein and β-chitin, to enhance healing in chronic wounds. Both hair follicle and adipose tissue derived MSCs, when paired with SLS, showed pro-regenerative and protective effects, reducing wound healing time in vivo. The combined therapy also resulted in a more functional and native-like healed skin. In vitro, both types of MSC-SLS increased cell migration and wound closure, and enhanced blood vessel formation. In vivo tests on 32 male db/db mice showed improved wound healing with both types of MSC-SLS treatments. The study concluded that this combination of cells and biomaterials could be a promising therapy for chronic wound healing.
