TLDR Eyelid cells share signaling components but differ in pathway activity.
The study investigated gene expression in embryonic eyelid epithelium of E15.5 mouse fetuses, revealing differential expression of signaling pathways in leading edge (LE) and inner edge (IE) cells. LE cells showed higher expression of genes related to epidermis development and pathways like EGF, Shh, and NOTCH, while IE cells had higher expression of muscle-specific genes and BMP pathways. Key findings included the essential role of BMP signaling in eyelid closure, the autocrine operation of the EGF pathway, and the differential activation of the SHH and Wnt pathways. The study highlighted the complex interplay of these pathways in eyelid morphogenesis and suggested that similar approaches could evaluate the contributions of the eyelid mesenchyme.
