TLDR A protein called sFRP4 can slow down hair regrowth.
The 2019 study investigated the role of Secreted Frizzled-related Protein 4 (sFRP4) in hair follicle regeneration. Researchers found that sFRP4, a protein expressed in both human and mouse hair follicles, inhibits hair follicle regeneration when overexpressed. However, the structure of hair follicles remained intact and the growth was not completely blocked. The protein works by preventing the nuclear translocation of β-catenin, a key protein in the Wnt signaling pathway crucial for hair growth. These findings suggest that sFRP4 could be a potential target for therapies aimed at promoting hair growth and treating conditions like alopecia.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.

The conversation discusses the potential of long-chain unsaturated fatty acids, like oleic and linoleic acid, as an additional treatment for hair loss, which may inhibit the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone to DHT and promote hair growth. Users humorously suggest using oils topically and discuss other hair loss treatments, but the main focus is on the science behind fatty acids and their role in hair health.

community No, Finasteride as a treatment for MPB was not an "accident"

      in Research/Science  105 upvotes 3 years ago
Finasteride was intentionally developed to treat BPH and later approved for male pattern baldness (MPB) due to its 5AR inhibition effects. The delay in MPB approval was due to concerns about off-label use for female hirsutism and the prioritization of treating a more debilitating condition.
