S100A6 Protein: Expression And Function In Health And Disease

    Wiesława Leśniak, Anna Filipek
TLDR S100A6 protein is linked to disease progression, especially in cancers.
The review discussed the S100A6 protein, a calcium-binding protein from the S100 family, emphasizing its expression in epithelial cells and fibroblasts and its altered expression in various diseases, particularly cancers. S100A6 played a role in cell proliferation, differentiation, and motility, with high levels linked to increased tumor growth and invasiveness. It influenced signaling pathways like Wnt, MAP kinase, and PI3K/AKT, interacting with molecules such as β-catenin and integrin β1. S100A6 was involved in cellular stress responses, apoptosis, and tissue repair, with increased levels observed in hair and stem cell regeneration. Its interactions with proteins like annexins and RAGE suggested its potential as a therapeutic target and a diagnostic marker for pathological states. Despite extensive research, the full understanding of S100A6's biological functions and its role in calcium-dependent processes remained incomplete.
