TLDR Rutin may help treat symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in rats.
In the 2016 study, rutin, a bioflavonoid, was found to have potential benefits in treating polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in a rat model. The rats with PCOS treated with rutin showed reduced glucose levels, total protein, and C-reactive protein levels, indicating improved metabolic profiles. Rutin also decreased serum testosterone levels and increased progesterone levels, suggesting a positive hormonal effect. Furthermore, rutin treatment resulted in a significant reduction in the number of cystic and atretic follicles and an increase in the number of corpus luteum, improving ovarian morphology. The antioxidant profile was enhanced by rutin, as it increased the activities of antioxidant enzymes and reduced lipid peroxidation markers. These effects were comparable to those of metformin, a standard PCOS treatment. The study concluded that rutin could be a potential medication for managing the clinical and biochemical features of PCOS. However, the number of rats used in the study was not provided.
