TLDR The complement system might be involved in the development of alopecia areata and could lead to new treatments.
The document investigated the role of the complement system in alopecia areata (AA). While early studies found no significant differences in complement levels between AA patients and healthy individuals, recent genetic research indicated that complement loci, like TRAF1/C5, might be linked to severe AA cases. Histological evidence on complement deposition at hair follicles was inconsistent. Understanding complement's role in AA could lead to new treatments, such as eculizumab, targeting C5.
