TLDR The conclusion is that normal trace element levels in newborn calves' hair are between the 25th and 75th percentiles, and levels outside this may indicate diselementosis.
The study aimed to develop criteria for retrospective diagnosis of intrauterine diselementosis by analyzing the tail brush hair elemental composition of newborn calves, which reflects the trace elements supply to the fetus in the last months of gestation. The study involved 125 clinically healthy 1-day-old calves (67 males and 58 females) from Simmental cows in the Central Black Earth region of Russia. Using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, researchers measured the concentrations of 11 essential (Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, I, Li, Mn, Se, Si, V, Zn) and 8 toxic (As, B, Cd, Hg, Ni, Pb, Sn, Sr) trace elements in the calves' tail hair. Reference values for these trace elements were established using percentile scales for both male and female groups. The study concluded that the normal range for trace elements concentration in hair should fall between the 25th and 75th percentiles, with values outside this range indicating potential diselementosis.

Scalp biopsies are crucial for diagnosing hair loss conditions like Diffuse Unpatterned Alopecia (DUPA) and retrograde hair loss, as treatments like finasteride and dutasteride may not be effective if other conditions are present. Combining PPAR-GAMMA agonists with retinoids could improve treatments for conditions like Lichen Planopilaris.
