Regionalization of the Skin

Jeanette A. Johansson, Denis J. Headon
TLDR Skin varies in thickness, color, and features due to complex genetic and cellular processes.
The document reviewed the regional variations in skin anatomy, such as thickness, color, and appendages, which arise during embryonic development through a positional code of transcription factor expression. These regional distinctions are maintained in adulthood by cell-autonomous epigenetic processes and mesenchymal-epithelial interactions. Despite clear anatomical differences, the molecular basis of these variations is more complex than visible traits suggest. The study highlighted the need for further research to fully understand the positional information and its maintenance in skin regionalization.
