Use of Autologous Platelet-Rich Plasma in Androgenetic Alopecia in Women: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
July 2021
TLDR PRP injections may help increase hair density in women with hair loss, but more research is needed.
This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the efficacy of autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in treating androgenetic alopecia (AGA) in women. The study analyzed data from seven articles and found that PRP-based interventions significantly increased terminal hair density compared to control treatments (SMD = 2.98, 95% CI = 1.10, 4.85), although there was no significant increase in hair thickness (SMD = 1.16, 95% CI = -0.96, 3.28). No major side effects were reported during or after treatment. The findings suggested that PRP injections could be a promising treatment for female AGA, but the results should be interpreted with caution until further studies with larger and more representative samples are conducted.
