TLDR Platelet-rich plasma boosts hair growth by enhancing autophagy.
This study investigates the role of autophagy in androgenetic alopecia (AGA) and the therapeutic efficacy of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) in promoting hair growth. In AGA model mice, PRP treatment significantly increased hair length and weight, and enhanced autophagy levels, as indicated by increased expression of autophagy-related genes (LC3 and Beclin-1). The study also found that rapamycin, an autophagy activator, produced similar hair growth results to PRP, while the combination of PRP with the autophagy inhibitor 3-MA resulted in reduced hair growth and autophagy marker expression. The findings suggest that impaired autophagy may contribute to AGA, and PRP therapy promotes hair growth by enhancing autophagy.
