TLDR The woman delivered a healthy baby boy despite taking spironolactone during pregnancy.
A 25-year-old pregnant woman was accidentally treated with spironolactone at 16 weeks of gestation due to a pharmacy error, raising concerns about potential risks to the fetus. However, she delivered a healthy male infant with normal genitalia at 38 weeks. This case suggests that spironolactone's antiandrogenic effects may primarily impact fetal development before 14 weeks of gestation. It highlights the risks of pharmacy dispensing errors during pregnancy and contributes to the limited data on spironolactone's safety in pregnancy, indicating that exposure in early and mid-gestation may not be as risky as previously thought. Further research is needed to confirm the safety of new-generation mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists during pregnancy.
