TLDR Clausena anisata may be effective in treating acne due to its ability to fight bacteria, reduce inflammation, and possibly lower sebum production.
The study investigated the potential of Clausena anisata against Propionibacterium acnes, focusing on its antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. Clausena anisata showed significant antibacterial activity with a MIC of 31.25 μg/ml, good antioxidant activity (IC50 of 34.46 μg/ml), and low cytotoxicity (IC50 of 74.46 μg/ml). It reduced IL-8 production in U937 cells, indicating anti-inflammatory properties, and inhibited lipase and hyaluronidase activities, suggesting potential to reduce sebum production and deter P. acnes spread. The compound trans-4-hydroxy-1-methyl-L-proline was isolated from C. anisata for the first time, highlighting its promise as an anti-acne treatment.
