TLDR 1% citral is more effective for treating comedone acne than salicylic acid.
This study investigated the effects of citral, a component of lemongrass oil, on experimentally induced comedones in New Zealand white rabbits. Comedones were induced using isopropyl myristate, and citral emulsions (0.5% and 1%) were applied for 4 weeks. Results showed significant improvements in comedone erythema and reduced tissue hyperplasia around pores in both citral groups (p<0.05). The 1% citral group demonstrated greater improvements, including better follicular epidermis hyperplasia reduction (p<0.05). The study concluded that 1% citral is an effective topical agent for alleviating comedone acne symptoms.
