TLDR Normal human melanocytes can avoid cell death through multiple pathways.
The study demonstrated that normal human melanocytes could be protected from apoptosis through both PI 3-kinase/Akt-dependent and -independent pathways. Activation of PI 3-kinase or Akt alone was sufficient to prevent apoptosis induced by the deprivation of growth-promoting agents. The research suggested that melanocytes have multiple signaling pathways to counteract apoptosis, potentially using the most efficient survival signals for different types of damage. The study also highlighted the role of Akt in melanoma progression by inducing apoptosis resistance and regulating proliferation. Further research was needed to elucidate the exact downstream steps of the PI 3-kinase/Akt pathway in protecting melanocytes from apoptosis.
