TLDR Hair follicles have a pH gradient, increasing towards the root.
The study examined the pH gradient in human hair follicles using pH-sensitive microparticles, involving 8 volunteers and 40 scalp hairs. It found a significant decrease in pH from the hair sheath (6.63) to the external hair shaft (6.17), with variations in pH distribution across different hair regions. The results suggested that pH-dependent drug delivery should target pH values between 6.5 and 7.0 for effective release within the follicle. The study highlighted the potential of these findings for hair care and treatment formulations, while recommending further research with more subjects to refine the results.
