TLDR Hair loss gradually happens, and minoxidil helps regrow hair.
The natural progression of androgenetic alopecia was observed in several studies over a 10-month period. The studies found a gradual decrease in hair count over time, with no significant difference between experienced and novice hair counters. The positive placebo effect seen in prior studies may be due to irregular placement of target areas rather than inexperience of the observers. Topical minoxidil has been shown to be effective in promoting hair growth in men with androgenetic alopecia.
