Expression of Mu-Opiate Receptor in Human Epidermis and Keratinocytes

    Paul L. Bigliardi, Mei Bigliardi‐Qi, S Buechner, T Rufli
TLDR μ-opiate receptors in skin cells may affect skin health and healing.
The 1998 study demonstrated that human epidermal keratinocytes expressed μ-opiate receptors at both mRNA and protein levels, with higher expression in the suprabasal layers. Functional assays showed that receptor expression was downregulated by Naloxone and β-endorphin, indicating a functional role in the epidermis. This suggested that μ-opiate receptors could be significant in skin pathology, wound healing, and itch perception, highlighting the interaction between the neural system and skin.

community Bile Acid-Mediated DHT Dysregulation Hypothesis

      in Research/Science  13 upvotes 1 month ago
Elevated bile acids can inhibit the enzyme AKR1C2, leading to increased DHT levels, which may accelerate hair loss in those predisposed to androgenetic alopecia. Treatments mentioned include topical minoxidil and finasteride.
