TLDR Minoxidil increases calcium levels and kills prostate cancer cells independently of calcium.
The study investigated the effects of minoxidil on intracellular calcium levels ([Ca²⁺]i) and cell death in PC3 human prostate cancer cells. The researchers found that minoxidil induced a rise in [Ca²⁺]i, which was associated with cell death. However, they also observed that minoxidil could trigger cell death through mechanisms that did not involve changes in [Ca²⁺]i. These findings suggested that minoxidil might have potential therapeutic effects beyond its known use for hair growth, particularly in the context of prostate cancer treatment.
