TLDR The tobacco leaf extract may help hair grow and could treat hair loss.
The study investigated the hair growth effects of a microbial biotransformed extract of tobacco leaves on male albino Wistar rats. The extract was obtained by fermenting tobacco leaves in cow urine for 28 days and then incorporated into herbal lotions at concentrations of 10%, 20%, and 30%. These lotions were applied to the rats' shaved skin for 30 days. The results indicated a concentration-dependent improvement in hair growth and an increase in serum total protein, alongside a reduction in serum total testosterone. The findings suggest that the tobacco leaf extract has the potential to promote hair growth and could be useful in treating alopecia, but the study called for more research to understand the underlying mechanisms and confirm safety and efficacy for clinical use. The number of rats used in the study was not mentioned.

Excess sebum rich in cholesterol and triglycerides can lead to hair loss through inflammation, with treatments like Ciclopirox shampoo, Benzoyl Peroxide shampoo, and Clindamycin gel recommended for managing conditions like seborrheic dermatitis and folliculitis. Pioglitazone is suggested for Lichen Planopilaris, while Omega-3s and reducing processed foods may improve sebum quality, though genetic factors play a significant role.

Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) impacts various skin conditions, including Androgenetic alopecia and seborrheic dermatitis, by causing overactivity in sebaceous glands. Topical medications Tacrolimus and Clobetasol can reduce these inflammatory conditions, and treatments like RU58841, Minoxidil, and Finasteride may also be beneficial.
