TLDR Cirsium japonicum flower extract increases melanin production and could help treat depigmentation conditions.
The study investigated the melanogenesis-promoting effects of Cirsium japonicum flower extract (CFE) in vitro and ex vivo. CFE significantly increased melanin content and tyrosinase activity in lightly and moderately pigmented human melanocytes. It also elevated markers of eumelanin and pheomelanin, increased intracellular cAMP, and up-regulated proteins TYR and MITF. Additionally, CFE enhanced melanin content in a 3D skin model and ex vivo human hair follicles. These findings suggest that CFE can stimulate melanin synthesis through cAMP signaling, potentially improving conditions like follicular depigmentation and vitiligo.
