In the study titled "Mackerel fermented fish oil suppresses human keratinocyte damage caused by ultraviolet B radiation," researchers investigated the protective effects of mackerel fermented fish oil (FFO) against UVB-induced oxidative stress in human keratinocyte (HaCaT) cells. The study found that FFO did not exhibit intracellular toxicity and had the ability to scavenge superoxide and hydroxyl radicals. FFO also demonstrated a cytoprotective effect by removing intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced by UVB radiation. It reduced oxidative damage to lipids, proteins, and DNA, and decreased UVB-induced apoptosis by reducing apoptotic bodies, DNA fragmentation, caspase activation, and Bax expression while increasing Bcl-2 expression. These results suggest that FFO can protect HaCaT cells from UVB-induced oxidative stress through its ROS removal effect.
