TLDR Fermented mackerel oil was found to promote hair growth by activating certain cell signals and increasing cell growth.
The study investigated the effects of fermented mackerel oil (FMO) on hair growth, specifically examining its impact on vibrissa follicles and dermal papilla cells (DPCs). The FMO was prepared using Lactobacillus plantarum and Saccharomyces cerevisiae under anaerobic fermentation conditions. The study found that when vibrissa follicles were treated with FMO for 14 days, there was a significant increase in hair-fiber lengths. Additionally, FMO treatment significantly increased the proliferation of immortalized vibrissa DPCs and resulted in cell cycle progression, including a decrease in the G1 phase and an increase in the S and G2/M phases. The mechanism behind these effects was linked to the increased phosphorylation of glycogen synthase kinase-3 B (GSK-3ß), which is a mediator of the wnt/ß-catenin signaling pathway. These results suggest that FMO has the potential to promote hair growth by activating wnt/ß-catenin signaling and encouraging cell cycle progression in DPCs.
