TLDR Low-dose flutamide effectively maintains reduced hirsutism with no side effects.
The study evaluated the safety and efficacy of low-dose flutamide (125 mg/day) as maintenance therapy for hirsutism in 43 women, following an initial 12-month treatment with a higher dose (250 mg/day). The results showed that the significant reduction in hirsutism, hair diameter, and hair growth rate achieved during the initial treatment was maintained with the lower dose. Androgen levels decreased significantly during the initial treatment and partially during maintenance. While 4 subjects experienced elevated liver enzymes and dropped out during the initial phase, no side effects were observed during the maintenance period. The study concluded that effective management of hirsutism could be achieved with an initial high-dose treatment followed by long-term low-dose maintenance.
