TLDR XIST RNA helps regenerate hair follicles by targeting miR-424 and activating hedgehog signaling.
A study from 3 years ago found that XIST RNA promotes hair follicle regeneration by activating the hedgehog signaling pathway through targeting miR-424. This suggests that targeting XIST and miR-424 could be a potential therapeutic strategy for hair loss and alopecia. The study used a 3D culturing model of dermal papilla cells and observed up-regulation of XIST and Shh, and down-regulation of miR-424 in the 3D culturing group compared to the 2D culturing group and freshly isolated DP cells. The expression of DP markers and Shh protein levels were also stimulated in the 3D culturing group.
