TLDR Mutations in specific llama genes may affect fiber quality for textiles.
The study identified and analyzed the genetic variability of the KRTAP7-1 and KRTAP8-1 genes in 117 unrelated llamas from various regions in Argentina. Both genes were found to be polymorphic, each encoding 4 protein variants. Notably, a variant in the regulatory region of KRTAP8-1 could influence protein transcription and translation levels. These polymorphisms are valuable markers for association studies and could aid in selective breeding programs aimed at improving fiber traits in llamas.
