TLDR LED light promotes hair growth by stimulating cell proliferation and reducing cell death.
The study investigated the effects of various wavelengths of LED light on human outer root sheath cells (hORSCs). It was found that low-level LED irradiation promoted hORSC proliferation, suppressed apoptosis, and enhanced migration. This effect was linked to the activation of Wnt/β-catenin and ERK signaling pathways, as evidenced by increased expression of Wnt5a, Axin2, Lef1 mRNA, and β-catenin protein, along with phosphorylation of ERK, c-Jun, and p38. Additionally, red light treatment upregulated IL-6, IL-8, IGF-1, TGF-β1, and VEGF mRNA expressions. LED-irradiated hORSCs also boosted the proliferation of human dermal papilla cells (hDPCs) in co-culture, suggesting that LED light promotes hair growth through these molecular pathways.

Clinical studies by Dr. Barghouthi and Dr. Bloxham indicate that Verteporfin, when used with FUE and FUT hair transplantation methods, shows promise in hair follicle regeneration and minimal scarring due to its ability to inhibit Yes-associated protein (YAP). Microneedling at depths of 3-3.5mm, combined with Verteporfin, could potentially reactivate dormant follicles, although the optimal dosage and application method are still under investigation. Concerns remain about the DHT sensitivity of regenerated follicles, highlighting the need for further research to optimize trauma levels and Verteporfin concentrations to achieve effective and scar-free hair regeneration.
