TLDR Going to bed late may increase hormones and decrease muscle in women with PCOS.
This study involving 636 women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) found that a late bedtime (after midnight) is associated with increased androgen levels, specifically total testosterone and androstenedione, and reduced lean muscle mass. The research suggests that late bedtimes may exacerbate androgen-related symptoms and decrease muscle mass, highlighting the importance of considering sleep patterns in managing PCOS. Despite using a gold standard DEXA for measuring lean muscle mass, the study's limitations include its cross-sectional design and reliance on self-reported bedtime data. Further research is needed to explore the biological mechanisms underlying these associations.
