TLDR Women with PCOS often have more sleep problems than the general population.
The study from 2016 on 95 women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) found that sleep disturbances, including clinically significant insomnia and excessive daytime sleepiness, are notably more common in women with PCOS than in the general population. Insomnia was identified in 12.6% of the participants using the Athens Insomnia Scale and in 10.5% using the Insomnia Severity Index, while 7.4% experienced excessive daytime sleepiness. The study also noted that sleep disorders in PCOS may be linked to affective and anxiety disorders, as well as somatic dysfunctions, and recommended that sleep disturbance screening be part of medical diagnostics for PCOS. Treatments like metformin therapy and continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) were mentioned as beneficial for reducing sleep disturbance intensity and improving associated conditions in PCOS patients.
