TLDR Women with PCOS have a higher chance of experiencing depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders.
In 2014, a study involving 43,486 women with Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) and 87,972 controls without the condition found a significant link between PCOS and the risk of developing psychiatric disorders. The results showed that women with PCOS had a higher risk of developing depression (hazard ratio [HR] 1.296, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.084–1.550), anxiety (HR 1.392, 95% CI 1.121–1.729), and sleep disorders (HR 1.495, 95% CI 1.176–1.899) compared to the control group. However, the risk of developing bipolar disorder was not significantly elevated. The study concluded that healthcare providers should consider regular mental health screenings for women with PCOS due to their increased risk of certain psychiatric disorders.
