Krox20 in Epithelial and Glial Stem Cells and Their Niches

Chung-Ping Liao, Edem Tchegnon, Lu Q. Le
TLDR Krox20 is important for cell differentiation in the brain and hair follicles.
The transcription factor Krox20 played a crucial role in the differentiation of hindbrain and glial cells and was also significant in the differentiation of epithelial cells within the hair follicle stem cell niche. Krox20 was involved in complex signaling pathways, such as Wnt/β-catenin, BMP, and Notch, which regulated stem cell quiescence and activation. The presence of Krox20-expressing cells in hair follicles highlighted its importance in hair shaft formation and pigmentation, as these cells provided a niche for mature melanocytes through SCF-KIT signaling. Further research was needed to fully understand Krox20's contributions to these processes.
