TLDR Pentoxifylline is a safe and effective alternative to triamcinolone acetonide for treating localized alopecia areata.
This study compared the efficacy of intralesional pentoxifylline (PTX) and triamcinolone acetonide (TRA) injections in treating localized alopecia areata (AA) in 60 patients. Both treatments were found to be effective, with PTX showing a high response (66-100% terminal hair regrowth) in 50% of patients and TRA in 46.6% of patients. Despite the small sample size and short follow-up period, the study concluded that PTX is a safe and effective alternative to TRA for localized AA.
