TLDR Pentoxifylline alone and combined with triamcinolone acetonide is effective for treating localized alopecia areata, with the combination showing the highest effectiveness.
The study evaluated the efficacy of pentoxifylline (PTX) versus triamcinolone acetonide (TRA) intralesional injections in treating localized alopecia areata (AA) in 75 patients aged 18-55 years. Patients were divided into three groups: Group A received TRA, Group B received a combination of TRA and PTX, and Group C received PTX alone. Results showed that both PTX and TRA were effective, but the highest response rate was observed in the combined treatment group (72%), followed by PTX alone (60%), and TRA alone (32%). The study concluded that PTX intralesional injection is an effective and easy-to-perform treatment with minimal side effects for localized AA.
