TLDR Using microneedles before applying eflornithine cream can make it more effective at stopping hair growth.
The study from 2014 aimed to improve the effectiveness of eflornithine hydrochloride cream for facial hirsutism by using microneedles to pre-treat the skin. The in vitro and in vivo studies, which used mouse skin and monitored hair regrowth in mice, respectively, demonstrated that microneedle pre-treatment significantly enhanced the cream's ability to inhibit hair growth. This was likely due to increased skin permeation of the drug. Histological analysis supported these findings, showing reduced cell proliferation in treated skin and hair follicles. The most effective results were seen in the group of four mice that received microneedle pre-treatment, with no hair growth observed within 36 days. The study concluded that microneedle pre-treatment could potentially improve the efficacy of eflornithine cream, possibly reducing the frequency of its application. Further research is needed to assess the safety of this combined treatment method.
