TLDR Women with both type 2 diabetes and PCOS have worse metabolic issues but milder reproductive symptoms after sleeve gastrectomy.
This study investigated the impact of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) on polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in 329 women undergoing sleeve gastrectomy (SG) for obesity. It found that patients with both PCOS and T2DM (n=98) experienced more severe metabolic issues, such as insulin resistance and dyslipidemia, compared to those with only PCOS (n=149). However, the reproductive features were milder in the PCOS+T2DM group, with lower testosterone levels and fewer cases of polycystic ovarian morphology. Despite taking longer to resume regular menstruation post-surgery, both groups had similar rates of regular menstruation (85% vs. 87%) one year after SG. The study highlights the need for further research on the comprehensive impact of T2DM on PCOS prognosis after SG.
