TLDR Reduced CD44 expression may cause abnormal hyaluronate buildup in cutaneous myxoma.
The study examined two cases of solitary cutaneous myxomas with perifollicular localization, focusing on the accumulation of hyaluronate (HA) and the expression of CD44. It was found that HA accumulated in the stroma of the lesions, while CD44 protein expression was significantly decreased in the keratinocytes of trichofolliculoma-like epithelial buds. The findings suggested that reduced CD44 expression in follicular epithelial proliferations might be linked to abnormal HA accumulation in cutaneous myxoma.
