TLDR Hair transplantation techniques have improved over time, leading to natural-looking results and high graft survival rates, making it a popular treatment for hair loss.
In 2000, a review on hair transplantation techniques, particularly for androgenic alopecia (AGA), was conducted, detailing the progression and patterns of alopecia, the role of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), and medical management with drugs like finasteride. The review traced the history of hair transplantation from the 1930s to the 1980s, highlighting advancements in micro and minigrafting that improved the natural appearance of hairlines. The document included two case studies: a 51-year-old man who received 1,200 micrografts and 1,100 minigrafts, and a 58-year-old man who received 1,800 micrografts and 1,000 minigrafts, both achieving successful results. The review also discussed potential complications and noted the high prevalence of AGA, affecting up to 50% of white men by age 40. Innovations in the field have led to a 90% to 95% graft survival rate, making the procedure more cost-effective and popular for treating alopecia.
