TLDR Drynariae Rhizoma extracts, especially the acetone and EtoAc fractions, may help treat hair loss.
The study investigated the effects of Drynariae Rhizoma extracts on hair growth in C57BL/6N mice. The acetone extract (GSB-1), EtoAc fraction (GSB-2), and n-buOH fraction (GSB-3) were applied topically, showing hair growth in 98%, 96%, and 60% of the treated skin areas after 16 days, respectively. The study also examined the immunoreactive density of VEGF, PKC-α, and SCF in the skin. Results indicated that GSB-1 had weak VEGF staining, while GSB-2 and GSB-3 showed mild staining in the bulge and root sheath. SCF antigens were more prominently stained in the experimental groups compared to controls. The findings suggested that Drynariae Rhizoma extracts, particularly the acetone extract and EtoAc fraction, could be potential topical treatments for alopecia areata.
