TLDR Ginkgo biloba polysaccharides may reduce inflammation and promote hair growth in mice with hair loss.
The study "Hair-growth promoting effect and anti-inflammatory mechanism of Ginkgo biloba polysaccharides" investigated the effects of Ginkgo biloba polysaccharides on alopecia areata (AA), an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss. The researchers found that Ginkgo biloba acidic polysaccharides can alleviate inflammation around hair follicles and promote hair growth in mice with AA. A specific fraction of these polysaccharides, WGBP-A2b, was identified as the main bioactive component with an anti-inflammatory effect. The mechanism of its hair-growth promoting effect may be related to its ability to improve the inflammatory response and regulate the expression of VEGF and HGF, as well as the expression of p-p65, p-IκBα. This research provides a theoretical and practical basis for the development of Ginkgo biloba anti-alopecia health foods, cosmetics, and drugs.
