TLDR Certain hair follicle traits in Merino sheep may be inherited.
The study examined skin specimens from 495 Australian Merino ewes across 22 flocks, representing four important strains. Using a standard biopsy method, the researchers analyzed histological sections to estimate various follicle population densities and fibre diameters. The data, including mean and standard error for each flock, serve as a foundation for future genetic studies on fleece structure. The study highlights the potential hereditary origin of certain extreme variants in hair follicle groups.
