TLDR About 21.3% of young, healthy Chinese men experience hair loss. Hairlines are mostly linear or have a central protrusion. Hair is densest on the top and back of the head, and hair follicles usually have 1 or 2 hairs. This information can help in designing hair restoration procedures.
In 2018, a study was conducted on 1000 healthy Chinese males aged 18-25 to investigate hair distribution patterns. The study found a 21.3% incidence of hair loss and classified hairline shapes into four categories: linear (48.7%), linear with central protrusion (27.9%), round (9.8%), and round with central protrusion (13.7%). The average height of the median line was 6.78±0.75 cm, and the ratio of the median line and the forehead height was 0.333. Hair density was highest in the vertex scalp (171.12±18.32 hairs/cm²) and the occipital scalp (147.79±20.46 hairs/cm²), with the anterior hairline having a density of 124.76 ±19.98 hairs/cm². The structure of hair follicular units was mainly 1-hair in the anterior hairline area and 2-hair follicular units were dominant in the vertex and occipital scalp. These findings were suggested to assist in hair restoration design and provide a theoretical basis for hair transplant surgery.
