The Role of Glypicans in Regulating Angiogenesis in Human Dermal Microvascular Endothelial Cells Related to Alopecia
December 2021
TLDR Glypican-1 is important for hair follicle blood vessel growth and could be a target for treating hair loss.
The study investigated the role of glypican-1 (GPC1) in hair follicle angiogenesis, focusing on its interaction with growth factors like VEGF and HGF. GPC1 was found to be a crucial co-receptor for VEGFR2 and c-Met, significantly influencing human dermal microvascular endothelial cell (HDMEC) behavior, including proliferation, migration, and pseudotube formation. The research demonstrated that GPC1 enhanced the effects of keratinocyte-originated conditioned medium (KORSCM) on HDMECs, and its downregulation via siRNA abolished these effects. The study highlighted the potential of GPC1 as a target for treating conditions like alopecia, suggesting its importance in hair follicle microvascular remodeling. Further research was suggested to explore the role of GPC1 glycosaminoglycan chains in hair follicle vascularization.
