TLDR GPC1 is important for blood vessel growth in hair follicles and could help treat hair loss.
The study investigated the role of glypican-1 (GPC1) in hair follicle vascularization, focusing on its interaction with growth factors like HGF and VEGF. GPC1 was found to be a crucial co-receptor for VEGFR2 and c-Met, significantly influencing the proliferation, migration, and pseudotube formation of human dermal microvascular endothelial cells (HDMECs). The research demonstrated that GPC1 enhanced the effects of keratinocyte-originated stem cell-conditioned medium on HDMECs, and its downregulation impaired these processes. The study highlighted the potential of GPC1 as a target for addressing hair follicle microvascularization issues, which could be relevant in conditions like alopecia.
