TLDR Genetic factors can predict male pattern baldness risk.
The study investigated the genetic basis of male pattern baldness using data from over 52,000 male participants in the UK Biobank, aged 40-69 years. Researchers identified more than 250 novel genetic loci associated with severe hair loss. They developed a prediction algorithm based on common genetic variants, which accurately distinguished between individuals with no hair loss and those with severe hair loss (AUC = 0.82). These findings could help identify individuals at high risk for hair loss and suggest potential genetic targets for intervention.

Hair loss is linked to DHT, with treatments like finasteride and minoxidil being common but not definitive. Economic interests influence research, and there is potential for new treatments like PP405 and RU58841.

The user experienced male pattern baldness starting at 18, tried finasteride with no success, and switched to dutasteride, which halted hair loss. Minoxidil had no effect for them, while their brother, who didn't use AR inhibitors, maintained a juvenile hairline and successfully grew a beard with minoxidil, highlighting the unpredictable nature of genetics in hair loss and treatment response.

An 18-year-old diagnosed with male pattern baldness is using probiotics, saw palmetto, pumpkin seed oil, soy isoflavones, biotin, fish oil, quercetin, a multivitamin, and ketoconazole shampoo. Replies suggest these methods are ineffective and recommend finasteride, minoxidil, and a derma roller.
