TLDR Secang wood extract hair tonic promotes hair growth and meets quality standards.
The study aimed to formulate a hair tonic using extracts and fractions of secang wood (Caesalpinia sappan L.), known for its antioxidant properties and bioactive compounds like brazilin, brazilein, 3´-O-methylbrazilin, sappanone, chalcone, and sappankalkon. The extraction process involved maceration with 96% ethanol, followed by partitioning using n-hexane. The hair tonic was evaluated through organoleptic tests, pH value determination, viscosity determination, homogeneity tests, and hair growth activity. The results showed that all three hair tonic formulas produced a red-orange color, had a pH of 7, were homogeneous, had a viscosity of 3 cps, and showed activity on hair growth and hair weight of rabbits. The formula FIII showed the best activity, significantly different from the negative control (p <0.05) on rabbit hair length data on day 30. All three formulas met standard requirements and showed hair growth activity.
