TLDR Certain growth factors can promote hair growth in mice by activating hair growth-related proteins.
The 2015 study explored the impact of three fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) - FGF-10, FGF-1, and FGF-2 - on hair growth in C57BL/6 mice, with 15 mice in each group. The researchers discovered that the topical application of these FGFs for 14 days stimulated the transition of hair follicles into the anagen (growth) phase and extended the duration of this phase. The study's findings, based on histomorphometric and immunohistochemical analyses, indicated that FGFs could be promising agents for promoting hair growth, as they were shown to induce the anagen phase and upregulate the expression of β-catenin and Sonic hedgehog (Shh), which are critical for hair follicle development. Hair growth was monitored at intervals of 1, 7, 14, and 28 days after treatment.
