TLDR Roselle flower extracts can protect against free radical damage in UV-irradiated antibiotics.
The study developed a flow injection analysis (FIA) coupled with chemiluminescence (CL) to assess the free radical scavenging ability of Roselle flower extracts on UV-irradiated antibiotics. It found that penicillin G and azlocillin were most susceptible to UV-induced photodegradation, while neomycin sulfate was the least affected. The addition of Roselle extract to the antibiotics significantly reduced CL intensity, suggesting its potential as a protective agent against free radicals in patients using topical antibiotics. The extract's antioxidant activity was confirmed by measuring the concentrations of bioactive compounds such as total biophenols, anthocyanins, and flavonoids. The study concluded that Roselle flower extracts could be beneficial in antibiotic treatments to mitigate the effects of photosensitizing reactions. No specific number of participants or subjects was mentioned, as the study focused on chemical analysis rather than clinical trials.
