    GlossaryChemiluminescence

emission of light from a chemical reaction

Chemiluminescence is the emission of light as a result of a chemical reaction. Unlike fluorescence or phosphorescence, it does not require an external light source to excite the molecules. This phenomenon is often used in biological assays and medical diagnostics to detect the presence of specific substances, as the light emitted can be measured and correlated with the concentration of the target molecule.
