TLDR Betamethasone is more effective for hair regrowth than latanoprost but has more side effects.
This study compared the efficacy of topical latanoprost 0.005% and topical betamethasone dipropionate 0.05% in treating localized alopecia areata in 50 patients, with 44 completing the treatment. Betamethasone was significantly more effective, achieving a higher percentage reduction in hair loss area and more complete hair regrowth compared to latanoprost. However, latanoprost had fewer adverse effects, making it a safer but less effective option. The study concluded that while latanoprost was well-tolerated, its efficacy was lower than betamethasone, and emphasized the need for larger, longer-duration studies to further evaluate latanoprost's potential.
