TLDR Dermatologists' treatment of alopecia areata is inconsistent, especially for children and advanced stages.
This study examined the treatment practices of dermatologists in the southeastern United States for alopecia areata (AA) through anonymous questionnaires and analysis of the National Alopecia Areata Registry (NAAR) database. Results indicated that dermatologists recommended treatment less frequently for children than adults and for more advanced stages of hair loss. The NAAR data confirmed that it was relatively common for no treatment to be offered for AA. Overall, the study found that dermatologists' treatment of AA was inconsistent, highlighting the need for a stronger evidence base to provide more consistent treatment options.
