TLDR Over-the-counter hair growth products may cause frontal fibrosing alopecia due to allergens.
The article explores the potential link between contact allergens in over-the-counter hair growth products and the exacerbation of frontal fibrosing alopecia (FFA), particularly in women. Analyzing 58 hair serums and solutions, the study identified common allergens like phenoxyethanol, sodium benzoate, panthenol, limonene, and linalool, which may worsen FFA symptoms. A study with 20 FFA patients and 24 controls found that 65% of FFA patients had one or more patch test allergens compared to 37.5% of controls, suggesting a potential link. Avoiding these allergens reduced scalp erythema in 70% of affected patients. The study calls for further research to clarify the relationship between FFA and contact allergens, recommending patch testing to identify specific allergens for individuals.
